Play Synopsis

"On The Swing" is an embodiment of the puzzled state of mind all of us experience all the time and are ruled by. We all have played on the swing during our childhood, and will sure relate to the romance of highs we went through and same time, the threat of fall if we let go. Holding hard to the swing extrapolates our emotions to the inability of letting go. Juxtaposing the movement of swing with what we experience, no halt in present, moving up into future, and going back into past, we live a life that does not belong to the swing, but our own.

"On The Swing" unfolds before the audience a story demonstrating different ages of lives and them maturing with emotions of love, violence, crime and an accident of bliss. Underlying it all, are the conflicts the characters face owing to their own individualities, belief systems and stereotypical Indian societal ideologies.
Written and directed by Dhaaran Productions, sections of the play are inspired by stories of true lives interspersed with imaginary episodes to form a play which winds and rewinds making each snippet fresh and surprising yielding an astounding experience.

An Indian adaptation of woody Allen’s rib tickler in a never seen before avatar.

A very famous American troupe is bound to come down and perform the play in India. But due to a last minute confusion they don’t turn up and the owner of the theatre is amidst confusion to resolve the issue when the tickets have already been sold out. And then he hires an Indian group to perform god and there the chaos and confusion begins, and leaves the audience in splits.

And then they perform god –

An actor and writer caught in a philosophical conversation embark on the search for the end... The end of a play, i.e. Watch as the lines between reality and play blur, not to mention the lines between logic and insanity, also the lines between the ordinary and the absurd. God by Woody Allen is one the veteran filmmaker's most absurd metaphysical play that questions the relationship between God and humans. Set among the Greeks in around 500 BC the play wastes no time jumping to modern references and out of place characters to keep the audience laughing.

Don’t miss God...

“ when chaos entertained “ – the new Indian express

“ a hilarious play “ – deccan herald

“ the actors had the audiences hooting with laughter , the unexpected and the absurd made for a good evening's entertainment “ - citizen matters

EXTREMITIES

DreamScope Theatre presentsAn All India Premiere of William Mastrosimone’s

EXTREMITIES

Directed by Puja Goyal
By Arrangement with Samuel French (Jagriti)

Mature content – this play is for 18 years and over only

HOW FAR WILL YOU GO TO PROTECT YOURSELF???

Set in present-day Extremities is every woman’s worst nightmare. A young woman, Marjorie, is attacked in her home by a would-be rapist, Raul; she manages to turn the tables on him. Her roommates come home to discover the attacker bound with cords, belts and other household items.

Terry and Patricia, the roommates, express different points of view about rape in society. Terry believes that Raul will not be convicted since a rape didn’t actually occur and there is no proof. Patricia believes in the judicial system and insists on calling the police. The three friends also turn on each other due to Raul's psychological game plan.

“Extremities” is a disturbing play on crime against women. The play is not only a psychological drama but an insane piece of art which transcribes human reactions towards serious issues like rape. Previous performances around the world have incited dramatic reactions from the audience where they have even attempted to save Marjorie from being raped on stage; later realizing that it is only a play.

Moliere's Imaginary Invalid by EXPT Theatre

EXPT Theatre proudly presents to you the Imaginary Invalid, written by Moliere. It will be staged on the 30th and 31st of July, at the KH Kala Soudha, Hanumantha Nagar. The show is at 7.30pm on all days and tickets are available at IndianStage, Buzzintown and the venue on the day of the show.

Directed by Nakul.P.Sangolli, the play promises to entertain you to the fullest with the finest French comedy offered by Moliere. With interesting characterization and thoughtful use of lights and music, be ready for an interesting evening of theatre.

Le Malade imaginaire (The Imaginary Invalid) was the last play written by Moliere and was first performed in February 1673 in Paris. A satire of the medical profession, the play contains a good deal of farce and was written to amuse King Louis XIV. It is also a superb character study of a hypochondriac, or a patient obsessed with being ill, and it contains a brilliant social and political commentary on Paris in the 1670s. Argan, the invalid in the play, plots to get his daughter married to a doctor, hailing from a family of doctors in order to have them around to tend him for free. But will the daughter agree to marry him? Is there a reason behind Beline’s affection to her husband Argan? What means will Toinette, the maid employ to alter the proceedings?

The play has been adapted to an Indian scenario based in the 70’s, with a South Indian Christian family reliving the same roles. In an attempt to appeal to the audience of our times, this take is as hilarious as the one written by Molière.

"MAYA"-Beyond the illusion of time and perception. A piece performed and choreographed by Veena Basavarajaiah created at the Gati Residency, New Delhi, August 2009

Can you go back in time? Is there time? What is the point of reference? Are we ageing? Have you experienced stillness? perception of the world is limited to the things that we can touch, taste, smell and see,Can we look beyond the sphere of perception ? Experience beyond light?
The dormant eye of the mind - the only vision capable of giving the whole picture, able to see things and make connections that the inferior senses couldn't even comprehend, lays low in a state of unused perceived extinction.. 'Maya' piece explores the concept of the illusion of perception and Mechanical time.

Sita-A Movement monologue by Veena Basavarajaiah

"Snusha Dashrathasya thwam, raamasya Mahishee priya, janakasya sutharaagnaha, swagathamthe pathivrathe"

One who is Dashrathas' daughter-in-law, and the dear wife of raama, who is also the daughter of Janaka , I welcome thee, the chaste one!

Ramayana essentially a literary work on Indian politics and society portrays Sita as the archetype of an Indian Woman being the perfect daughter and an ideal wife..  This piece takes you on an emotional journey of the Ramayana from a womans' perspective. A movement monolugue that gives you an insight into her mind , body and soul. A contemporary performance exploring the abhinaya aspects of Bharatnatyam is set to the original verses of Valmiki Ramayana.  The movement vocabulary of Sita– followed the [histrionic] tenet of bharatanatyam ' yatho hastha , thatho drishti...'which demands of the performer that ‘where the hand goes, the eye follows’. As for the music, the rhythm of the verses from the text to add voice to movements. the music and movements stimulate each other and have some sort of a dialogue

Blackened Petals by AAKT on May 16, 2010

Blackened Petals

A vivid drama with sublime touches of dark comedy that follows the life of an innocent village girl Jasmine, who is married to Jim, an arrogant workaholic from the city, while Geoff, a man who secretly loves her, looks on as his hopes of one day being with the woman he loves are cruelly crushed; a usual event which ensues when secrecy looms large over love.

Jasmine, now living in the city, realizing that Jim seemed to love his work far more then her, stumbles upon a middle aged unmarried and fiscally unsettled stranger, Robby, who lends a shoulder to support her and wins Jasmine's heart as Jim never could. Robby’s heart melts when one noon Jasmine takes off her wedding ring to support the living of herself and her new found love; a shamed and broken Robby suggests that they visit his well-off and gullible old aunt who lives alone; The relationship heads towards a new corridor with a new person in their lives. Will Jasmine find someone new again, with both pockets and hearts or will somebody from the past haunt her again in an abysmally different approach?

If so, how will Jasmine, now standing on the thin, fractured wall which separates principles and desires, find a way out? As the voices of mirth and trust echoes in her ears, will she retell herself what love is?

"Nara-Simha yuddham -- ondu premada kathe"
on April 9th & 11th @ KH kalasoudha

is Mindry.in's second feature presentation. Although it is ostensibly a take on prevalent political scenarios, it also ensconces within itself a gentle love story. The lead character, the Prime Minister, is an unbelievably farcical character. Being a former dramatic actor, he runs his cabinet much as a medieval monarch, with musicians and jesters in his office. The man who brought him to his seat of power from the stage is the Home Minister. A Machiavellian character who is, to his great alarm, slowly losing control over his own puppet, the Prime Minister.

The central event of the play occurs when the Prime Minister, in an emotional moment, proposes a vote of no-confidence against his own government. The man who faces the Prime Minister in the subsequent elections is ace former first class cricketer Simha. A man who believes everyone is trivial before God and decides to plunge into politics, unable to swallow the plight of the nation any more. In the midst of this pitched political battle, the Home Minister embarks on a love affair with media personality Megha. Does the Prime Minister survive the elections? Does Simha emerge triumphant instead? Does the Home Minister get the girl in the end? While answering these questions, the play also looks at political rallies, campaign speeches, generously made empty promises, the media, the manipulation of controversies by politicians to their benefit and other issues.

Continuing in the grand tradition of satire in Kannada stage history, "Nara-Simha Yuddham" aspires to be a significant step in the same path for Mindry.in. It will be staged on the 9th of April, 2010(a Friday), at 7:30 PM and on the 11th of April, 2010(a Sunday), at 6:30 PM at the Kengal Hanumantaiah Kala Soudha (http://www.khkalasoudha.org/) in Hanumantanagar. Treadmill at its first glance is a comedy in the simplest sense of the world. In its simple manner it looks at the various instances of our lives when we continuously run but without ever getting anywhere. The metaphor of the treadmill looms throughout the play, in its content and in its form , where images, instances , memories repeat but are interpreted afresh by everyone in their own way .The play looks at relationships between a man and his world. These relationships map out a closer glance at all those special moments and relationships that we remember but do not have the time to reflect upon in our day to day lives, in our imaginary treadmills.

Director’s Note:
The Head Start Children’s repertory is an essential part of The HeadStart School, Koramangala.
The members of the repertory, are children aged 7 to 13 and after a fairly long process on various aspects of theatre, the children have devised this adaptation of the classic play by Habib Tanvir’s Naya Theatre.
In our process , some things have changed but more than ever the realization has remainded that what makes this play timeless is its eternal topicality.

The children view the play from their world. Set in contemporary times, here in Karnataka , the play is a satire on our understanding of society. At HeadStart the children go through various levels of theatre training. Starting with 3 month long workshops and then finally moving to the repertory , the children are keen on learning and experimenting with the theatre as an art form on a long term basis.
The Repertory would like to thank the entire staff and faculty at Head Start School, and the entire theatre department.

Most of all , we would like to thank our audience , for being here to give our young thespians an opportunity to share their first steps in to the world of the theatre. These are our first steps towards creating a long term children’s repertory which trains and performs continually, from a young age
